The market for application integration solutions has emerged into two distinct classes of applications. Online template based solutions have made simple point-to-point integration of SaaS based applications more accessible. TORO is here today due to the founder’s frustration with the way that enterprise software applications have traditionally been sold, customized, deployed and managed. In our opinion the enterprise software industry lacks transparency. That is, transparency as to the cost, deliverable, timeframe to deploy, and management of enterprise software. Enterprise software companies do not typically publish their price lists preferring instead to have an enterprise sales consultant call a sales lead, discover a budget and then charge what they think the client can afford. Most projects go significantly over budget, run behind time, or are not finished at all. Then, when it comes time to upgrade an on-premise system you have to dump, replace and start the whole process over again.
SaaS is slowly changing the traditional models but even then many of the enterprise class SaaS vendors still have a "contact us for pricing" notice on their web site and on-premise deployments still account for a significant percentage of enterprise software sales. Deploying enterprise software has suffered from the same lack of transparency. Typically enterprise software is sold as a "framework" which is highly customizable. TORO Limited was incorporated in Hong Kong in 2014 by Australian founder and CEO, David Brown, and has its principal development center based in the Philippines. TORO employs around 50 people. The company was funded with seed capital in excess of USD $1M by its founder and has bootstrapped its operations since that time. The vision for TORO was born out of Australian founder and CEO, David Brown's, own personal experience deploying enterprise class software for an online retail business he started in 2002. The business grew quickly. What started as a fairly simple operation grew more complex as it started trading in multiple geographic markets, shipping thousands of orders per day, in multiple currencies, with several independent brands, four warehouses, manufacturing its own product range as well as reselling third party products, and a product catalog containing hundreds of thousands of unique SKUs. What had started as a small business quickly developed enterprise scale problems with heavy demands on systems automation, integration and scalability.
The experience of deploying enterprise class software was not only a multi-million dollar investment but also caused a significant disruption to the business operations for the next few years. The leap from the systems that had helped the business get started to enterprise class solutions was enormous in terms of both the energy and cost. David soon realised that there hadn't been any transparency to the true cost and impact on his business before the company had started the project. Having started his business with software that his company had written itself, he realised that there had to be a better way for companies to deploy enterprise class solutions without the enormous burden this normally entails.
